Independence day is a great celebration full of parades, picnics, and, of course, no Fourth of July celebration would be complete without fireworks. While the Fourth of July is a day full of fun for us humans, it can be an extremely scary time for our dogs. According to Home Again via Petfinder, more pets get lost on July 4th than any other day during the year. Large crowds are one thing, but add the deafening sound of multiple fireworks going off once the sun goes down and it’s no wonder our poor pups are stressed, scared, and confused.
There’s no denying our pets need some extra TLC while we celebrate the United States’ independence. Whether you’re staying at home or going out to a community event and leaving your pup behind, it’s important to take some precautions for our pets. We’ve put together some tips on how you can keep your beloved pups safe and sound this holiday.
While none of us want to plan for our dog to run away, it’s always good to be prepared. Make sure your dog is wearing their collar during festivities on the fourth and be extra sure the contact information is up to date. Have you moved recently? Changed your phone number? You can easily create a new tag at your local pet store.
Take a Recent Pic of Your Pup
Of course, our camera rolls are full of pictures of our little fur babies. Out of caution, though, it’s helpful to have a clear and recent pic of your pup. Make sure the most identifiable aspects of your dog are visible and that it captures their likeness well in case you need to use it as a reference in the search for a lost dog.
Get Exercise Done Early in the Day

With high anxiety and stress, we want to give our dog one less thing to be stressed about. Unexercised pups more commonly express anxiety symptoms, so avoid an anxiety overload by exercising Fido early in the morning on the fourth. Go for a run, a nice long hike, or a trip to the dog park. Not only is it a great way to avoid the crowds and heat, your pup will be a bit more zen for the rest of the day.
Keep Dangerous Items Out of Reach
Sparklers, poppers, and smaller fireworks are easy to leave around when prepping for the cookout and fireworks show in the evening. Lots of these items contain harmful chemicals both for small humans and for our pets. Keep your dangerous items on high shelves and be sure to discard them in a place that’s hard to access for wandering little hands or paws.
If you know you won’t be home to comfort your dog when the fireworks start in the evening, try arranging a distraction for your pup to help with the anxiety. Something entertaining like a frozen treat is a great way to keep your pup focused on something other than the loud noises. Another great option is to play some soft classical or calm music while you’re out to help drown out the sound of the fireworks.
If you’re at a cookout with your dog, make sure you’re paying attention. Ask friends and family to avoid giving your dog human food and to play with your pup away from flames and fireworks. If you’re at home, keep an eye on your dog to watch for signs of anxiety and be sure to pay attention if you’re enjoying the evening outdoors in case a loud noise scares them away. In all scenarios outdoors, keep your dog on leash at all times.
Keeping your dog safe during the Fourth of July can be easy with the necessary precautions. Save yourself from a sick or lost dog this Independence day and plan ahead. There’s nothing better than knowing you’re taking the best care of your beloved pup. Happy Fourth of July!
