August can be one of the hottest months of the year as we hit the peak of summer before fading off into autumn. This is about the time of year that people like to stay indoors to take advantage of the AC, or lounge by the pool to take a dip when it gets just a bit too uncomfortable. But what about our furry counterparts? Dogs are made to withstand some intense weather, but if you’re feeling too hot, imagine what a few layers of fur would do. Us dog owners know to keep an eye on our pups while the weather is extreme, and many of us know how to spot signs of heat exhaustion. Beyond that, it’s great to know how to combat and prevent issues with heat for your dogs. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to keep your dogs cool as we enter the last leg of the summer:
When you go on long walks with you dog in the summer heat, consider investing in a collapsible bowl to provide water as you go. Your dog will appreciate it, and it’s a nice way to pace yourself and pause for a moment.
Some dogs may not prefer this, but if your pup is very hot after running around outside, they may like to lay down on something cool. An ice pack or cool damp towel are great options to help bring down the heat.
What better way to cool down your dog than with his favorite thing? Frozen treats give your dog the satisfaction of a yummy snack while chilling things out. Typically, you should avoid feeding your dog ice cubes directly as they can cause issues with their teeth. However, if you have an old ice cube mold, try filling it with peanut butter instead of water. It’s a quick and easy frozen treat for your pup in a pinch!
